Beyond Benchmarking

Annually by May 1, a subset of covered building owners must demonstrate either satisfactory building energy and water efficiency or undergo actions for efficiency improvement. If an owner can demonstrate that a covered building meets key performance standards through yearly benchmarking, the owner can then submit a Performance Verification Report.

If a building is not able to meet these standards, the owner can perform an energy audit, retro commissioning, or targeted efficiency upgrades to improve performance.

Buildings over 50,000 square feet with an assessor parcel number (APN) ending in either 0 or 1 must have Beyond Benchmarking requirements fulfilled by May 1, 2023. Exemptions can be submitted between March 1st and April 1st.

Buildings over 20,000 square feet will be required to submit Beyond Benchmarking documentation beginning in 2024. Review the schedule below with the property’s Assessor’s Parcel Number, APN, last digit to determine when a property is due.
